The Ruins of the New Argentina: Peronism and the Remaking of San Juan after the 1944 Earthquake

(Duke University Press)   In this book, Healey describes the 1944 earthquake that left 10,000 dead and 100,000 homeless in Argentina, and argues that the disaster and the subsequent rebuilding that followed transformed not just the province but also the whole nation. Recreating the city became a landmark project for a generation of modernist architects and planners, as well as a controversy and challenge for local residents and the Peronist state. Healey is an assistant professor of History at the University of California, Berkeley.
