Second Sight: Views from an Eye Doctor’s Odyssey
(CreateSpace) This book is a memoir from the ophthalmologist who created the non-profit ORBIS, which is dedicated to providing and teaching modern eye care in developing countries, most notably through its flying hospitals manned by volunteer surgeons. In addition to discussing his work and challenges with ORBIS, Paton talks about his formative years, his struggles with dyslexia, his encounters with historical figures ranging from the Shah of Iran to Adlai Stevenson, and his pursuit of the challenge in bringing western medicine to developing nations. Paton is chairman of the department of ophthalmology at Catholic Medical Center of Brooklyn and Queens and is emeritus professor at Baylor College of Medicine.
