Seeing Depression through a Cultural Lens
This volume of Seeing Depression Through a Cultural Lens (Oxford University Press), a collaborative effort between Fogel (a neuroscientist) and Jiang (a scholar of comparative culture) examines the ways in which cultural identity shapes perceptions of depression, suicide, and the bipolar spectrum. Cultures inform how mental health and mood disorders are discussed and how different conditions may — or may not — be stigmatized. The book aims to offer an education in treating and assessing mental health conditions across diverse populations.
