The history and importance of iron and steel are traced from ancient to modern times in Steel: From Mine to Mill, the Metal That Made America. The technology of steelmaking and its developers are explained, while illustrations show Lake Superior iron mining, blast furnaces, rolling mills, and steel plants. Brooke Stoddard ’69’s hands-on research included descending into Mesabi Iron Range open-pit mines, riding on a 1,000-foot ore boat from Duluth to Cleveland, and interviewing men as they worked next to furnaces of liquid steel.
