In this follow-up to his award-winning debut work Into Each Room We Enter Without Knowing, Shanahan offers a new book of poetry that deeply reflects on various aspects of life. At the center of the collection is “On the Overnight from Agadir,” which chronicles his survival of a devastating bus accident in Morocco. Shanahan’s poems focus on a variety of themes including mixed-race identity, queer desire, time, morality, and the legacies of anti-Blackness in the United States and abroad. At the heart of Trace Evidence (Tin House Books) Shanahan’s poetry reflects the human need for intimacy and connection in order to survive.
