The success of 18th-century British merchant and writer William Hutton was intimately connected to the growth of his chosen home city of Birmingham. The Useful Knowledge of William Hutton (Oxford University Press) uses Hutton’s extensive personal notes and published works to comment on the effects of the Industrial Revolution in Birmingham and the archetype of the “self-taught” professional, which Hutton embodied.
