(Princeton University Press) This book looks at how a liberal democracy should respond to hate groups and others that oppose the ideal of free and equal citizenship. It proposes a new approach called value democracy, in which the state protects the right to express illiberal beliefs, but also engages in democratic persuasion by publically criticizing discriminatory viewpoints. Brettschneider is an associate professor of political science and of philosophy at Brown University.
