In 1841, mountain man Jesse Tipps has a near-fatal encounter with hostile Indians on his way to California. While recuperating, he learns the ways of Russian settlers and Pomo natives and, after becoming embroiled in the 1845 Bear Flag Revolt, is forced to choose allegiances as the fate of the West is shaped forever. This is the first novel by Bergquist, a film director and producer.
