(University of Notre Dame Press) In this book, Roche argues for the value of the liberal arts. He draws upon his experience in higher education as a student, professor, and administrator, and shows how the theoretical perspective of instructors connects to the practical concerns of students. The book received the 2012 Frederic W. Ness Book Award from the Association of American Colleges and Universities. The award recognizes a book that “best illuminates the goals and practices of a contemporary liberal education.” Roche is the Rev. Edmund P. Joyce, C.S.C. Professor of German Language and Literature and Concurrent Professor of Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame.
