These stories, filled with unbelievable events and colorful characters, range from the Mischianza of 1778 when the British Army spent $700,000 to throw a grand party celebrating their defeat as they evacuated the city; to the Spanish washerwoman who pretended to be a baroness; and the Philadelphia blueblood who wound up being the first “sugar daddy.” Keels is a writer and historian in Philadelphia.
