Wind Turbine Syndrome: A Report on a Natural Experiment

(K-Selected Books) In this study, Nina Pierpont argues that low frequency noise from industrial wind turbines causes negative medical effects. She has coined the term “Wind Turbine Syndrome” (WTS) to identify a cluster of symptoms (including migraines, motion sickness, vertigo, anxiety, noise sensitivity, visual sensitivity, and gastrointestinal sensitivity) experienced by some people who live within a certain distance of wind turbines. Proposing that WTS is mediated by disturbed sensory input to eyes, inner ears, and pressure receptors across the body, she argues that wind turbines should be built no less than 2 kilometers away from residential areas to ensure safety. A board-certified pediatrician, Nina Pierpont practices behavioral medicine in rural upstate New York.
