A Written Republic: Cicero’s Philosophical Politics

Published Jan. 21, 2016

(Princeton University Press) Baraz makes the case that philosophy for Cicero was not a retreat from politics, but a continuation of politics by other means, necessitated by his forced retirement under Caesar’s dictatorship. His goal of benefiting the state by providing new moral resources was traditionally Roman, even if his method — working with Greek philosophical sources — was unorthodox. Baraz is an assistant professor of classics at Princeton University.
