Young, Gifted and Diverse

Black Americans are not a monolith, but many studies treat Black people as if they are. Massey, Charles, Kramer, and Torres explore diversity within the Black community by studying elite Black students in Young, Gifted and Diverse (Princeton University Press). Drawing from a representative sample of more than 1,000 Black students who graduated from America’s most selective colleges and universities in the early 21st century, the book explores the identities, attitudes, and beliefs that led these students to success, and the impacts of their elite status after graduation.
