John W. Dayton Jr. ’33

WE LOST JACK Dec. 3, 1993, from a heart attack. He lived in a beautiful house by the water in Lloyd Harbor on Long Island, N.Y., not far from Bayside, where he was born in 1910. He prepared at Hun. In college, he was a member of Cap and Gown and roomed with Paul Campbell, his lifelong friend. Jack spent most of his years on Wall Street with Clark, Dodge. Paul said he was struck by Jack's enchantment with the water.

Jack had a Star boat as a youth, a cruising sloop after WWII, and a fishing powerboat in later years. At Princeton he rowed crew, was captain of the swimming team, and was on the intercollegiate sailing crew. He sailed on innumerable boats, including races to Bermuda; loved all kinds of fishing; and was captain of two navy vessels in WWII (he was discharged as a It. commander).

In 1936, Jack married Marguerite Gutknecht, who survives, as does their son John III, and daughter Deborah. The class extends to them its profound sympathy. John was a good man.
