Allan A. Hoffman Jr. ’56

Body

Allan Augustus Hoffman died Oct. 7, 1994, of self-inflicted gunshot wounds, in Danville, Va., a year after suffering a stroke.

Allan, a New York native, came to Princeton from Ridgewood H.S. He majored in biology, joined Tower Club, and was a varsity fencer. He graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1960.

Allan did his internship and residency at Univ. Hospital of Cleveland and served two years as a captain in the Army Medical Corps. He was in private practice in urology at the Danville Urologic Clinic from 1967 on and was acknowledged as one of the leaders in his specialty, serving on numerous professional boards and panels.

Allan was a civic activist, serving as Danville's Republican chairman for eight years, and on the board of the Virginia Museum of Natural Science and History. He was also president of the Roanoke River Basin Assn. (an organization fighting Virginia Beach's efforts to build a pipeline from a local lake), and found the time to make himself an expert photographer.

Allan is survived by his father; his daughter Alexandra-Leigh; his sons Ian and Allan III; and his former wife, Susan. To them, the class extends its sympathy.
