Peter J. Sharp ’52

Body

Peter Sharp died of melanoma Apr. 17, 1992, at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Manhattan. His memorial service was held at the Julliard School of Music, where he had been due to become chairman of the board of trustees.

A graduate of Hotchkiss, Peter belonged to Tiger Inn, majored in history, and played 150-lb. football for two years at Princeton. He also was active in Orange Key and was publicity director of the Tiger.

Peter was a giant in two fields. He continued the tradition of his hotelier family, which ran Delmonico's, the Ritz Tower, and Stanhope in Manhattan, and the St. Francis in San Francisco. After a tour with the Navy, Peter assumed leadership of the family business. He later joined Douglas L Elliman & Co., then formed his own company. Peter bought the Carlyle Hotel, as well as many corporate properties.

Perhaps Peter's greatest loves were the arts and their support. He will be remembered for his leadership and generosity as a trustee of Julliard, the Lincoln Center, the City Center, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, He was a past chairman of the N.Y.C. Opera and a co-sponsor of the Mostly Mozart Festival.

Peter is survived by his mother, Evelyn; his former wife, Margaret; his son Peter; daughters Caroline '83 and Randall; sister Mary S. Cronson; and two grandchildren. We extend to all of them our deepest sympathy.
