Edwin J. Dikeman Jr. ’27
Ed’s death, on May 7, 1989, closed a career that was distinguished by a devotion to finance, military service, athletics, and Princeton family tradition. He graduated with honors in economics and at once began work at the Bankers Trust Co. of New York, where he served for 43 years. He worked first in the bond dept. and then in commercial banking. For many years, he was a V.P. assigned to the investment bankers and brokers division.
Ed's patriotism inspired his long service in WWII. In April 1942 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a first lieutenant. After two years at Sheppard Field, Tex., he transferred to Military Government and was assigned to Fulda, in American-occupied Germany, where he earned the rank of major. Ed had a lifelong love of track and field athletics, and was supremely happy when he served as a referee at track meets and Olympic team trials and when he awarded medals that he had previously won. He attended eight Olympiads and was appointed to the Businessmen's Olympic Committee. Ed enjoyed golfing, figure skating, playing tennis, traveling, and oil painting. The label "Renaissance Man" really fitted him.
Ed was the fifth generation of Princeton alumni on the maternal side. We send our sincere sympathy to his family: his widow, Mary Claflin Dikeman; his stepsons, Robert G. Brewer and William Ord Brewer; a nephew, Peter J. Dikeman; and a niece, Barbara D. Ryan.
