Son of oilman John D. Rockefeller, he was one of the early venture capitalists but made his reputation as as a philanthropist and conservationist, funding the expansion of Grand Teton National Park and supporting dozens of institutions including the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and Princeton.
