As Princeton’s successful 2007–08 swim teams prepare for championship meets later this month, here’s a look back at the University’s swimming program in 1944. Coach Howard Stepp (at left in photo), who came to Princeton “on loan” from Yale for the 1928 season and then stayed 25 years, is pictured exercising unidentified swimmers or divers. Stepp’s teams won 162 of their 228 meets, and he coached seven national collegiate champions, including the late James Shand ’48, a backstroker whose name is visible on the blackboard. Can any PAW readers identify these students?
