From the Archives

A couch would make any dorm room cozy — perhaps that was what these unidentified students had in mind during move-in day in 1988. Larry French took the photo in front of Witherspoon Hall. The license plate begs the question: Did they drive the rooftop couch all the way from Florida? Perhaps some PAW readers know the answer and can name the movers.

Raising a Question

The From the Archives photo in the Sept. 17 PAW had a caption that said: “The license plate begs the question: Did they drive the rooftop couch all the way from Florida?” No, the license plate did not beg the question, it raised it. To beg the question is to argue circularly by asserting the very point in question, e.g., “I think that point is illogical because it makes no sense.” See begthequestion.info.
