More than 335 members of the Princeton faculty have signed a petition saying that “all members of our community deserve to be treated with empathy and respect” and supporting President Eisgruber ’83’s post-election statement promoting “a culture of open discussion where all voices are heard and respected.” Here is the full statement:
Amid reports of hate crimes on campuses and schools, we, the undersigned Princeton University faculty, firmly emphasize our belief that all members of our community deserve to be treated with empathy and respect. We come together on this issue not as Democrats or as Republicans, but as concerned members of our community. We fully support President Eisgruber’s recent message emphasizing Princeton University’s “steadfast commitment to embrace people of all ethnicities, religions, nationalities, genders, and identities, and our equally fundamental commitment to foster the free and vigorous exchange of ideas.” And we pledge to be outspoken in the defense of these values.

This statement by the faculty and the president of the University is distressing. It should not have been necessary in an institution like Princeton, with its stature and its history. It embarrasses me greatly.
