Merwin ’48, Bradley ’80 Featured in New Films

Two Princeton alumni will be featured in documentary films released this month: W.S. Merwin ’48, a former poet laureate of the United States and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, is profiled in Even Though the Whole World Is Burning, which premieres June 8 at the Maui Film Festival; and Bob Bradley ’80, a former coach of the U.S. men’s soccer team, is the central figure of American Pharaoh, a film about Egypt’s national team that will air on PBS stations beginning June 16. Even Though the Whole World Is Burning (Cicala Filmworks) highlights Merwin’s work as well as “the singular form of environmental activism and land stewardship he embodies,” according to the film’s website. The poet, who was featured in PAW in 2010, lives on a patch of land in Maui that he bought in 1976 and reforested over the last four decades. [vimeo 66935140] American Pharaoh (Soura Films) tells the story of Egypt’s quest for a World Cup bid in the midst of extraordinary tumult at home. Bradley, named as the team’s coach in 2011, embraced the challenge, even after a deadly riot at a soccer stadium shut down the country’s top professional league, and guided the team to Africa’s final qualifying stage, where it ultimately lost to Ghana.
