President Barack Obama awarded two alumni the National Humanities Medal July 10. Former Princeton president William G. Bowen *58 was cited for his contributions to economics and his “probing research on higher education in America.” Sports writer Frank Deford ’61 was honored for “reveal[ing] the humanity woven into the games we love.” Princeton professor of history emerita Natalie Zemon Davis received the medal for her “exacting eloquence in bringing the past into focus.”
Obama nominated Crystal Nix-Hines ’85, an attorney in Los Angeles, as the U.S. Permanent Representative to UNESCO, with the rank of ambassador, based in Paris.
Two alumni are among the winners of the 2013 PEN Literary Awards: Deford will receive a lifetime-achievement award for literary sports writing, and Molly Weigel *96 was named in the poetry-in-translation category for The Shock of the Lenders and Other Poems by Jorge Santiago Perednik. Daniel Mendelsohn *94 was a runner-up for his book of essays Waiting for the Barbarians.
