(University of California Press) The author explores the history of France, race, and the link between politics and soccer by tracing World Cup soccer from its French origins in the 1930s. He focuses on the French team’s 2006 World Cup heroes: Zinedine Zidane, the son of Algerian immigrants, and Lilian Thuram, born to parents from Guadeloupe. Dubois is a professor of French and history at Duke.
