Albert Leroy Allen Jr. ’42

Body

Albert was a native of Harrisburg, Pa., where he was born in 1920. He attended the Harrisburg Academy and Mercersburg. After his freshman year at Princeton, Albert transferred to the University of Virginia, from which he graduated in 1942.

Immediately after graduation Albert entered the Navy. During World War II he served as gunnery officer on the U.S.S. Waller, which was continuously in action in the Pacific theater. During the Korean War, Albert was recalled to active duty and, at the end of that conflict, was discharged as a lieutenant commander.

Returning to Harrisburg, Albert joined the family insurance firm, Albert L. Allen Co. In 1952 he became president of that organization and of the American Sentinel Insurance Co. Over a lifetime he enjoyed golf, fly-fishing, and travel. Membership in country clubs and fishing clubs in Harrisburg and Ligonier, Pa., allowed him to pursue those sports.

Albert was divorced from his wife, Betty. He is survived by his sons, Albert III and Bryan, and his daughter, Sara Allen. To them, the class sends its sympathy.
