E. Herbert England Jr. ’51

Herb was born April 30, 1929, in Decatur, Ill., the son of Edward H. and Mildred (Boruff) England. His stepmother was Dorothy T. England, and his sister was Mary E. Grant.  

A graduate of Phillips Exeter, Herb majored in economics at Princeton, was a member of the Advertising Forum and Tiger Inn, and roomed with Clayt Sheedy and Tom McClure. After two years of service in the Army, he went on to earn a law degree from Northwestern University Law School. In 1960 he and Kathryn Louise Yoakum were married in Springfield, Ill. She died in 2005.  

Herb was employed by IBM Corp. for many years and for the last 20 years managed his and his family’s farms in the Decatur area. He died at home April 29, 2010, one day short of his 81st birthday.

He is survived by three nephews, Eric Grant, Michael Grant, and Donald George Sutton-Brown Jr.; his niece, Holly Grant; and his niece and nephew by marriage, Amy Doran and Brian Butler. Herb was a lifelong Presbyterian. Burial was in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield.
