Edward Henry Bennett ’40

During World War II, he served in the Army Air Force at the Pentagon and in the Far East at Luzon, Philippines. He was awarded the Legion of Merit. Postwar, Ed continued in the Air Force Reserve, retiring in 1959 with the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Ed spent his entire business career with Gay Carpenter & Co., the reinsurance subsidiary of Marsh & McLennan Companies, retiring in 1982 as vice chairman and chief administrative officer. He also served as a director of Taisho Marine and Fire Insurance Co. of America.

He enjoyed fly fishing and hiking in the Adirondacks, the hobby of genealogy, and, as he expressed in our 40th yearbook, “gardening when I can find the time.”

Ed is survived by his wife of 62 years, Louise Faris Bennett; two daughters, Faris Elizabeth Bennett and Anne Bennett Petronis; and four granddaughters. His classmates wish to offer them their sincere condolences.
