Edward Shrader Ridgway ’59

Ed died June 1, 2009, of pneumonia, which he contracted while in the hospital in Atlanta, Ga., for a hip replacement.

Ed came to Princeton from Chicago Latin and the Lawrenceville School. He studied engineering, joined Cottage Club, and established himself as a formidable poker player. He left Princeton in the fall of our junior year, and we lost touch with him.  

We learned of his death in an e-mail from John Evans, Ed’s freshman-year roommate, who wrote: “Two days before Ed died, he  

had his daughter contact Princeton, Lawrenceville, and Chicago Latin in hopes of reopening communications with friends. I got his contact information from the Chicago Latin Web site. I called as soon as I got it only to learn he had died the day before.”

After leaving Princeton, Ed returned to Chicago, working at the First National Bank of Chicago; the family business, McNaught Metals; and Alexander & Alexander Insurance. He married in 1960. In 1976, he moved from Chicago to Stamford, Conn., where he worked for Harris Computers Inc. as director of sales for Western Europe. He retired in 1996, and moved first to California, then to Atlanta.

Ed is survived by Janina, his wife of 49 years; his daughter, Andrea; and his son, Lawrence.
