George Knauer Jr. ’41

A native of Elizabeth, N.J., he prepared at the Pingry School. At Princeton he majored in biology and graduated with honors. He was assistant manager of the swim team and sports manager of Elm Club.

After graduation, George went to Cornell Medical School and spent his first year of residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City before entering the Army in 1946. He served at Aberdeen Proving Grounds and was discharged as a captain in 1948.

George then joined with Philip Wolein and Harold Goldfield to form the Elizabeth Obstetric Group. He was board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology and a fellow of the International College of Surgeons.

He was also an associate professor at the New Jersey College of Medicine and chairman of the ob/gyn department at Elizabeth General Medical Center. He was active in the Rotary Club of Elizabeth and served on the board of deacons at the Elizabeth Second Presbyterian Church.

George was predeceased by his wife, Bobbie Brokaw Knauer, and his brother, Warren ’44. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy; his sons, George III, Christopher, and Edward; and three grandchildren.
