George V. Allen Jr. ’58

George died of Parkinson’s disease Dec. 11, 2014, one day after his 79th birthday.

He came to Princeton from Deerfield Academy. George majored in history and joined Cottage Club. He was a member of both the freshman and varsity squash teams. His senior-year roommates were Tom Kellogg, Had Talbot, Dave Montgomery, and Jerry Savitz.

After a stint in the Army, he graduated from the University of Virginia Law School.

George was a longtime partner at the Washington, D.C., law firm of Shaw, Pittman, Potts & Trowbridge. An ardent conservationist, he served as deputy assistant administrator under William Ruckelshaus ’55 in the founding of the Environmental Protection Agency and was later a board member of the Maryland/DC Chapter of the Nature Conservancy. He also served on the boards of Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, American Rivers, and the Population Institute.

He was an avid trout fisherman, backpacker, and bird-watcher, and, in his younger years, a club champion squash player.

To Jodie, his wife of 54 years; his son, Ted ’91, and his wife, Emily; and his grandsons, Andrew and Henry; the class sends its deepest sympathy.
