John Whittingham Wilmer ’38

Jack Wilmer died Oct. 21, 2009, at Delray Beach, Fla.

He prepared for Princeton at Gilman School in Baltimore. At Princeton he majored in mechanical engineering. He played freshman lacrosse and soccer, varsity lacrosse for three years, and varsity soccer junior year.

Jack was a member of Cottage Club. He roomed in Blair Hall with Bill Hoffmann from sophomore through senior year.

During World War II, Jack served as a Navy officer aboard destroyer escorts in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean, for which he was awarded two bronze stars. After the war he became assistant to the executive vice president of Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. Retiring from business for health reasons, he moved his family to Florida in 1957. In the ensuing years Jack was active in Delray Beach as chairman of the Princeton Alumni Schools Committee for Palm Beach County and as warden of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. He also helped with Little League and Pony League baseball.

Jack is survived by Jean, his wife of 64 years; their children, Jack Jr. ’70 and Louise Stebbins; and seven grandchildren, including Jack Jr.’s children, Jack III ’00, Julie ’02, and Harry ’07. To Jean and all the family, the class extends heartfelt condolences.
