Robert G. Elwell ’55

Bob grew up in Washington, D.C., and graduated from St. Albans School. At Princeton he majored in history and was a member of Colonial. Later he received an M.B.A. from American University and then served as a jet pilot in an Air Force fighter squadron in Libya and Spain.

His business career included senior-management positions with Pan American Airways in the United States and abroad. His responsibilities included high-level governmental liaison, as well as international business development. One of his major accomplishments as vice president of Pan Am’s Falcon Jet subsidiary was to provide the Coast Guard with a fleet of 41 Guardian aircraft to modernize and enhance its rescue operations.

In 1981, Bob joined International Business Consultants in Washington focusing on new business development and project management. His particular expertise was aerospace and defense. In 1990, the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry selected Bob as one of 15 official overseas guests to attend its leadership program. In 2006 he retired and moved to Austin.

To Bodil, whom Bob married in 2001; his daughter, Vivian, from his first marriage; three stepchildren; and four grandchildren, the class extends deepest sympathy.
