Theodor C. Sauer Sr. ’40

Ted Sauer died peacefully March 24, 2013, in Duxbury, Mass. He was 95.

Ted was born in Brooklyn and attended Kent (Conn.)School. At Princeton he roomed with Macdonald (“Mac”) Halsey and Frank F. (“Bud”) Davis, and played tennis and 150-pound football. He was a member of Cloister.

After graduating with honors in chemical engineering, Ted went to work for the Hercules Powder Chemical Co. during the war. After the war he joined Walter P. Sauer & Sons Inc., a company started by his grandfather in 1886. The company’s specialty was large, custom-made conference tables. Some of the company’s clients included the International Monetary Fund, AT&T, IBM, and Air France.

Ted’s passion was tennis, which he played every chance he could. But he became well-known for attending all the local sports — lacrosse, soccer, swimming meets, and tennis — involving his three grandchildren.

Ted was predeceased by his wife, Suzanne. He is survived by his children, Ted Jr., Cynthia West, and Sandra Sauer-Bernard; and his grandchildren. Class condolences go out to his family.
