William Mayhew Dickey ’68

Body

Will died at home Nov. 15, 2009, after an extended battle with cancer.

Will came to Princeton from the Lawrenceville School, where he was captain of the football and lacrosse teams his senior year. At Princeton, Will played on and captained the rugby team, ate at Tiger Inn, and majored in English. He went through Marine OCS after graduation and served as a platoon commander in Vietnam, receiving the Combat Action Ribbon, among other awards.

After his service, he earned a master’s degree in history at UCLA and taught at the Harvard School in North Hollywood, Calif. In 1978, he returned to Lawrenceville where he taught history, was director of college counseling and mentoring, and coached rugby. He retired in 2005.

Will was a leader in the Lawrenceville town community and was active in its historical society. He was a curious and active traveler who loved the outdoors, skiing, fly-fishing, and traveling by horse, foot, and kayak. Since 2001, Will and his wife, Jean, had a place in Seeley Lake, Mont., which allowed them to remain active in the outdoors and be involved in its historical society.

Will was a fine teacher, Marine, and friend, and will be greatly missed. To Jean; his son, Chris; and his brothers, Larry and Jonathan, the class extends deepest sympathy.
