Note: The following memorial was published online with the Nov. 13, 2013, issue.

The class learned recently that Mike Hicks is reported to have died in April 1990, but we know little of the circumstances.

Mike was born and grew up in Anniston, Ala. He was a graduate of Anniston High School and entered Princeton with the Class of 1964 in the fall of 1960. The University’s records suggest he may have withdrawn from Princeton at the end of his freshman year, but we cannot be certain.

Notes to the class secretary in 1964 and 1965, written from Atlanta, suggest he planned to attend the Princeton-Yale football game on campus and that he’d “attended the UNC–Princeton basketball game in Greensboro and was disappointed not to see any classmates at the game.” A subsequent undated letter from the Georgia State Hospital in Milledgeville closed with the following sentiments: “Gentle Nassau calls forever in the memory of my brokenhearted mind … My apology for not staying with it.” To our knowledge, there were never any further communications.

To Mike’s family and friends, the class extends most sincere condolences.
