John S. McCormick Jr. ’35

Body

John McCormick, known to us as “Johnnie” or “Barrel,” died July 16, 2010, at his home in Manchester, Vt.

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Johnnie came to us from Choate. At Princeton he was an English major and a member of Cap and Gown. His senior roommates were Henry McCormick, Rollie Luther, Greg Gregory, and George Willock.

Following Princeton, Johnnie went to Harvard Business School. During World War II he was a captain in the Army, serving in the Philippines in the latter years of the war. After the war he and his wife, Bertha, moved to Pawlet, Vt. His entire working life was spent with the family firm, the J.S. McCormick Co., later to become Limewood Investments, of which he was chairman of the board until his death. Along the way he was a bank board member, president of the Southern Vermont Arts Center, and member of several other corporate boards. An active golfer and game hunter, Johnnie was also a lifelong conservationist, leaving 15,000 acres in the Adirondacks to the Nature Conservancy.

Johnnie and Bertha were married for 69 years before she died. He is survived by their three children, five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
