Time named MARIA RESSA ’86 and other journalists who have faced repression its 2018 “Person of the Year,” calling them “The Guardians of Truth.” Ressa heads Rappler, an online news source in the Philippines that has been critical of the authoritarian practices of President Rodrigo Duterte. She has been charged by the government with tax fraud; Ressa calls the charges “part of government’s desperate efforts to harass and silence independent media,” according to Rappler. Ressa told PAW in May 2018 that Rappler “seems like a hopeless case, tilting at windmills. But we are a democracy. So it’s important to keep raising the alarm when transgressions happen.” To read PAW’s story on Ressa, see bit.ly/ressa-paw.
